About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. Malignant tumors occur when abnormal cells begin to rapidly reproduce, creating a mass of tissue. Like other cancers, breast cancer can grow into the surrounding tissue and may also form new tumors in other parts of the body. Breast cancer can be invasive or noninvasive. Invasive means it has spread to other tissues. Noninvasive means it has not yet spread.

There are two main types of breast cancer:

  • Ductal carcinoma – most breast cancers are of this type
  • Lobular carcinoma
