About Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma (also known as myeloma or plasma cell myeloma) is a progressive hematologic (blood) disease. It is a cancer of the plasma cell, an important part of the immune system that produces immunoglobulins (antibodies)to help fight infection and disease. In multiple myeloma, plasma cells grow out of control in the bone marrow and form tumors in the areas of solid bone. It is the growth of bone tumors that makes it harder for the marrow to make red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
